Did the 1911s & ARs live up to their predicted obsolecents ?

I remember during the 90's the tupperware wander gun advicates where declairing the dimise of all things 1911. I see the same senerio playing out again off & on with the ARs.

This obsesion with "short stroke tappet op-system" is a clasic example of re-inventing the wheel. Every version I'v seen is fundimentaly flaud. Their bolts are going to brake do to higher bolt unloking forces & the upper will ware prematurly do to torequing forces from the extra bolt resistance. They, do to a lack of thinking things through, are going to experience a mutch higher rate of failure.

They reduce the bairing serface aera of the bolt carier key, alowing the torquing bolt carier to dig into one side of the upper from the new extra-high bolt unlocking forces.

It useto be said, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. An evolution of designe is a natual intellegent progress in platform deveopment. Haisty jumps backward is back ass engenieering. Your not eliminaiting a problem, your just moving it from one location to another & ading more small parts & springs to clean, loose & brake. Graet going guies!

Time will proove that Eugen had the right idia all along. Just like it did with Browning's 1911:

I pretty much agree with you.  The good old basic direct gas impingement AR upper, as Stoner designed it will run and run as long as it's kept "wet".  That said I did just buy a SCAR light that I look forward to abusing.  I've shot my Son's and it is definitely accurate.  We'll see as to reliability.

Love 1911s and have owned several and resisted my Son's (the heretic) affinity for Glocks.  Recently I bought a Mod. 19 & came to like it, now own 2 x 17s and a 21 (which I carry - not willing to give up on .45ACP just yet).  Flirted with the S&W M&P's but gave up on them.  If I could have only one, it would be a 1911.

ARs and 1911s, as Gabe Suarez is quoted as having said; "Simple gear and an ill intentioned heart..."

If I remember correctly, the SCAR, like alot of the so-called new generation of rifles/carbines,
is an AR18 action wrapped with trendy new furniture; so it should run good, just like Eugene
Stoner designed that action too! (Nothing's new under the sun).

Pistol infidel, LOL!

That's a good one! I'm amazed you like the Glock over the M&P? I hate the Glock, but only
for one reason, the God- Awful trigger! The M&P's trigger doesn't chew my trigger finger
like the Glock dose! Is it the reverse for you?

Neither Clocks nor the M&Ps bother my trigger finger, it's a matter of pointability for me.  The fit in the hand.  Even with the different back straps for the M&P, it just didn't feel right.  The Clock, for me fit better than the M&P, not as good as a 1911, but usable.  The ideal pistol for me would be a Browning Hi-Power (excellent fit for my hand) in .45ACP.

I also just got a FNP 45 Tactical that feels good in the hand, but haven't made it to the range yet, waiting on my BATFE approval for an AAC Ti-Rant 45 suppressor..

Wow! That's amazing! It's the complete reverse for me! Maybe it's because I have large
hands with short stubby fingers?

I know what you mean about the Browning's high-power! Out of all of the handguns I own,
the high-power is the only 9mm I own!

I recently reanimated a long dormant interest in firearms (my only child turning 18 has a lot to do with that).  I view bring a different perspective:

My requirements are simple :

1) 100% reliability (battle-proven)-- THE GOTO weapon of it's type in the event a post apocalyptic situation unfolds.

2) Must be within easy reach given my limited funds to purchase and fire.

3) A versatile platform easy to maintain and accessorize.

I own a custom upgraded M4 configured Colt AR-15-- Why? All items are Mil-Spec, Piston designs are in their infancy and pieces and parts are not interchangeable.

I own a Kimber .45 acp 5" Stainless TLE/RL II and a Browning 9mm Hi-Power for the same reasons--  Both designs are time and battle tested; with numerous inexpensive customization / accessory options.

I agree!

Especially in regards to the M4!

This latest gimmick of going backasswards in rifle operating systems without doing their
engineering homework has actually greatly reduced the AR platform's service life!

1. By going to a piston tapped system, you're going to experience a dramatic increase in bolt
failures because you no longer have the gas relieving the binding pressure of the locking
lugs as the bolt was pushed forward in the Stoner system!

2. Now that the locking lugs are binding under chamber pressure; the bolt carrier is racked
to the left side (rotated) when the piston is pushing the bolt carrier back to ejected the
spent case, causing the bolt carrier's key to dig into the left side of the upper receiver.
Trashing it!

3. Since the piston is eccentric to both the barrel and the bolt carrier, it now forces the rear
of the bolt carrier down; digging into the bottom of the buffer tube. Trashing it as well!

4. Then on top of all that, you have more parts to clean, loose and brake, not to mention
the extra dead weight!

Eugene Stoner had it right with the AR platform, just like John Moses Browning did with the
1911 platform!

If you want to create an AR hybrid, I suspect Eugene Stoner's versions with his AR18s and
his Stoner 63s are the benchmarks/clones to work from!

That's what's wrong with today's generation of designers and engineers, they have no idea
what have came before them, so they waist alot of time and resources reinventing the wheel!
Not to mention the newer tappet systems are way heavier than Stoners system.
If people would stop worrying so much about how cool their gear is, and focus on how better to fight with it, they'd be a lot better off.  Pick something, stop trying so hard to justify it to anyone and everyone who will listen, and learn to shoot and fight with it!
Boy do you got that right!

Amen!

I experiment with different weapons because I can.  I like the SCAR-L and the FNP 45 T, but my "fighting weapons" are the Glock 21 and my DD 10.3" SBR (AR).  The DD is short, handy, balances well, even with a suppressor, and well; it is an AR, keep it wet and it runs like the proverbial Timex.  The Glock?  It's an excellent fighting handgun, for me, and it's reliability is a given.  Both of these weapons keep on running dirty, and I have to admit to running them that way most of the time; I DO NOT obsessively clean weapons.  YMMV.

All that said, there's always gonna be a better solution down the road.  Without innovation, whether radical or incremental, we'd all be sitting here discussing whose club is better .  :)
