How Are You Preparing in Wake of Japan's Nuclear Catastrophe?

With recent headlines like, Radiation Spurs Fears Around Food... ... 'PLUME' TO HIT US FRIDAY ... Feds deploy more radiation monitors in western USA... and worse, I'd like to know if Japan's nuclear catastrophe and breakdown in the supply chain is prompting you to ramp up your own personal survival preparations?

One thing the Japanese people can't be accused of is being a third world nation or lacking in technology or ingenuity.

In fact, according to the International Amateur Radio Union, there are some 1,296,059 licensed ham radio operators in Japan, which leads the world in this technology-based area in the number of trained emergency communicators. By contrast, the United States comes in second with 722,330 radio operators.

According to the Amateur Radio Relay League, Japan ham operators are deployed throughout the worst-hit areas of Japan providing emergency communications for served police and welfare operations where regular cell phone and land line networks are currently down. See Radio Amateurs in Japan Provide Communications Support after Earthq...

So, one thing you can do is upgrade your communications capabilities and get involved in your local EMCOMM ham radio organization, which will provide training and support. But it's only a start. People are without food, heat and basic services. A new headline indicates things are getting worse: DESPAIR TURNING TO ANGER...

Is this news spurring you to action? What are you learning from Japan's woes? What are you doing?

I am an airline pilot who regularly flies to Tokyo.  I departed there just before the earthquake.  Japanese law prevents me from carrying a firearm, even as a Federal Flight Deck Officer, so there is no change in that regard.  I have for several years carried a personal dosimeter to monitor my radiation exposure, so there is no change there.  The only change I have made since the earthquake is that I now carry extra food and water for the extent of my stay.

I must commend the Japanese for their handling of the disaster, and their societal values which are admirable.
I started filling out my survival kit about 6 months ago.  And I cannot think of anything else I need, except to stockpile some food and supplies.  But you always need those so it is better to figure out how to get them. Fortunately I am walking distance to 4 or 5 stores that have food and other "necessities".  I have scoped out all the water sources that I can filter, if the tap water is contaminated.  And I have planned out some routes home if an incident happens while I am out. Pray it is not necessary.
I have been putting away canned goods and other supplies. I purchase ammo and spare mags and speed loaders at area guns shows. I advise those who will listen to be prepared, because it is only a matter of time before civil unrest, or a major natural disaster happens where I live in Washington State. Even if a disaster happens elsewhere in the county, it can effect all of us. As you know, supermarkets only have a three days supply of food. If you don't adequate supplies before something major happens, you will be too late.  It pays to plan ahead
The number one thing that one needs to get a grip on: governments/corporations " ALWAYS" lies!

The number two thing is your preparations are a joke! Disasters and catastrophes don't last for
3 days like clockwork, but tend to drag on for weeks and months! Gear, meds and survival
info are just as vital as 6 months of food and water! I couldn't help but laugh when my friends
found themselves flatfooted with no gasmasks and Bio/chemical/radioactive fallout filters,
potassium iodide pills and not enough food & water to last them long enough to weather out
the time period of contaminated food & water! For years I tried give them info on what to get,
Where to get it and books/catalogues; but it just went in one ear and out the other! Now
they feel so stupid, they try to rationalize it's not so bad; even though the background radiation
isn't the real danger, it's the inhaling and ingesting these hot radioactive particles that'll kill
you! And it attacks the fast growing cells the hardest, making children the most vulnerable!

Any tme the gov't or the media tell you "not to worry," it's time to worry!  However, preparations need to be way of life, not a just something you in panic mode.  We've been working on becoming more and more sefl sufficient for the last couple of years.  We've planted gardens, raised chickens and rabbits, and now we're working on cows, goats and starting a bee colony this year.  As far out as we live, we'll more than likely be sheltering in rather than bugging out.  I tend to think it'll be safer that way, since a lot of SW Missouri will be bugging out.

Your absolutely right about bugging in!

I'll be really curious how well your bee hive does! I've heard two theories on why they're
dieing off: one is because of the GMO crops are killing them off do to the insecticides
genetically engineered into it and/or the thinning/disappearing of the ozone is causing the
bees to go blind and are no longer able to see the centers of the flower via ultraviolet
markers!
