I read a lot about mindset and what it takes to be a (insert your favorite here cop, operator, warrior, etc.). Then I take a look at the people who are saying this stuff and I wonder: If you have the warrior mentality, why not use that to push yourself away from the dessert tray? You might think you can "Keep going and continue the fight no matter what" but if you can't even make time for 30-minutes of exercise three times a week... don't tell me how you are going to drive on when the going gets tough. There is not reason at all you can't get up out of bed each morning and do 30 push-ups. Unless you can't do 30 push-ups. And if you won't even try... well then, I'm not too worried about your gun or your knife or you mall ninja cred. If you don't take the smallest step to get yourself in shape, my guess is you don't really tie up a lot of time training you other skills.

Nike says, Just Do It. So? What's stopping you? Get out and do something... Walk for 30 minutes today... then alternate walking and running for 30 minutes tomorrow... pretty soon, you will be running for the entire 30 minutes. Now you have some goals. How about this? Max effort push-ups for two minutes. How many can you crank out ... do it every other day for six weeks and watch the number grow.

I am no marathon runner and I don't have the arms and the abs of an Olympic gymnast, but I swim, run and lift at least three times a week.

What do you do?

Wow, if only Tactical Gear had a column about that. :)

It is often said that the mind is the most important weapon but without the body's stamina to do what it instructs us to do in the time of need it is like carrying an unloaded weapon.

Being a Militia Company Commander, I run at least 5 miles daily, on top of a comprehensive PT regimen consisting of push ups, pull ups, crunches, stretching, and power weight lifting. I also study various martial arts techniques, primarily lethal techniques and CQB. This is followed up by range time daily. I reload all my ammo.My weapons are kept in top notch condition, I know the ballistics by heart. I train my troops without mercy. yet, I am harder on myself and expect more of myself than I do others. The secret is to teach others through inspiration. Earn their trust and you are well on the way to building a crack squad of operators. Way too often I see the trend evolving that follows a lone wolf attitude. One thing I learned from a career as a professional warrior, is that a TEAM makes the warrior, not the other way around. Want to be Rambo? Hollywood is hiring. Want to adopt a professional attitude and learn how to serve the domestic Militia in the proper and intended fashion? Get to work and build team.

Oldswat, I agree 100%. Mr. Bishop's words are true "I am harder on myself and expect more of myself than I do others. The secret is to teach others through inspiration. "
I am the conditioning coach for a High School Wrestling team. I do the conditioning WITH them and i always demonstrate FIRST.
The words "Follow Me" are the best instructions any coach or leader can give.

walk, stand rather than sit, jumping jacks for the cardio, and pushups. Some mild dumbells for the bone mass. Hand and eye work for speed 2X weekly. Think more than act as we age.
