I'm working on a story for Tactical Gear Magazine and I need your help. If you are a LEO, I want to know what you carry off duty. Be specific. Does your agency allow off-duty carry or does your agency require off duty carry? Do you carry everywhere? In church? At the mall? Name the make and model of firearm. Tell me the brand of ammo. Do you have a knife? ID or a badge?

Let's hear what you carry and why.

You can respond here or email me directly at kevin.michalowski@fwmedia.com

Please include as much identifying information as you can. If I use your submission I will email you for more detail. Let's hear it.

Stay safe.

I'm a deputy in Tampa Florida and carry a Glock 33 with Corbon dpx ammo. My department went to 40 cal. but I stayed with 357 sig off duty because I like the round better. I carry everywhere I go because the one time I don't carry is the one time I'm going to need it. I also don't kid myself that bad things only happen in the bad parts of town... Bad things and Bad people are all around you.. mixed in with the good people. I carry my ID also, so I don't get shot by friendly fire.

I am a reserve deputy in a rural county in Missouri. We are encouraged to carry off duty. We all ,full time and reserve, have to provide our own weapons so I carry my back up off duty. It is a Glock 33 with Winchester T series hollow points. My back up to it is a PF9 with similar Tseries 124 grain 9mm hollow points. I also have my ID and badge with me at all times as well. I try to always have a folding knife and light as well.

I started in law enforcement in 1972-1973 as a Texas Highway Patrolman, in that time period I carried a S&W model 28 as my duty weapon and S&W model 19 with a 2 in barrel as an off duty weapon, and a High Standard .22 mag. derringer as my back-up.

As a Texarkana Texas Police Officer In 1974-1779, I carried a nickle plated Colt 45 MK IV Series 80 Government Model with the .45 ACP ammo that came from the original Super Vel Corporation. They pushed a 190-grain JHP to 1060 fps from a five-inch Government Model.

In 1979 I joined the Federal Bureau of Prisons as a Correctional Officer. A s a Bus officer and armed-escort officer we carried S&W model 19, 2in. Later in my career in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, we changed over to the Ruger KP95 models/with Winchester Silvertip 125 gr. HP ammo. The pistols are double-action only, incorporate a stainless steel slide, and feature a custom polymer composite frame with a picatinny rail. As a BOP Bus Lieutenant, Armed-escort, and WITSEC Lieutenant, we carried the Ruger KP95 models 9mm/15rds, the old stand-by Remington 870 Shotgun, and the Colt AR 15/16.

I retired in 2001 with 29 years as a Law Enforcement Officer. As a "Retired Law Enforcement Officer", I carry a Springfield Armory 45 acp XD as my primary carry gun with COR BON 45 Auto+P 230 gr. JHP ammo, and a North American Arms Mini Revolver 22 mag. with 40 gr HP's. as my back-up. I do carry a spring assisted lock-blade knife, with a seat-belt cutter & a window punch.

Thanks goodness for the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004. I carry the "Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 Identification Card" ever-where I go. This card identifies me by Federal Law as a "Law Enforcement Officer" and has authority to conceal and carry anywhere in the united States! All Law Enforcement Officers and Administrators should be aware and be knowable in this useful law enforcement tool, as it allows all off-duty officers to carry.

In Texas is is against the gun laws to carry a gun in church, but as a "Law Enforcement Officer", yes, I carry my weapon in church every Sunday. No murderous Jihad or insane anti-religious zealots allowed in my church! I carry everwhere.

I carry either a glock 27(dept. issued) or glock 23 off duty, with 180 HP. I also carry a benchmade auto, at least 1 extra magazine and at least one light. I usually carry strong side in a B/H Serpa holster. Always have badge & ID if I am carrying.

Off duty I carry the Glock 17 or 26. I usually carry a bench made knife and always have my badge and ID. The department changed a few years ago, it was a mandatory carry if you were in the jurisdiction. Then they rethought the idea and changed to letting officers not carry if they were attending religious events, working out, at an event where there was already armed security, and any time you might consume alcoholic beverages. I still carry in church.
Brian Leatherwood Comment by Brian Leatherwood on August 24, 2010 at 11:44am
Off duty I carry my Glock 27 along with a spare mag, Emerson knife, badge and dept ID. I carry either in a Blackhawk Serpa holster strong side or in a Maxpedition Fatboy. I have my weapon with me 95% of the time, as there is always the possibility you could be in the right place at the wrong time...even at church or your child's school. Per my department's General Order, I am required to have my duty/off-duty weapon avavilable at all times.
